Why Aren't My GTA 5 Codes Working?

If you entered a code correctly and nothing happens, it is almost always one of the seven reasons below. Each has a simple fix.

Quick answer: Fastest fix: dial the number on the in-game phone instead of the button sequence. Phone input can't fail on timing.

7 common causes

  1. Too slow: the sequence has to be finished quickly.
  2. An extra press: one stray button breaks it.
  3. Mission or cutscene: some scenes block cheats; try free roam.
  4. GTA Online: codes only work in story mode.
  5. Wrong layout: entering a PlayStation sequence on Xbox (L1 instead of LB).
  6. PC console won't open: switch to an English (US) layout or use the phone.
  7. In a vehicle: some cheats like the parachute do nothing while driving.

Trophies and achievements

You can't earn trophies or achievements in a session with cheats. Load the save from before you cheated to play clean again.
